FAQs

Who can take Karate?

Karate is a great endeavor for anyone seeking physical activity and mental stimulation! You will challenge yourself in a fun, non-competitive environment.

What makes martial arts different from other sports?

At AFK Staunton, our style of Karate focuses on the whole person. We’re more than punching and kicking! We work on character building, especially developing self control, respect, and discipline.

The instructors are more than happy to work with you, your child, and your family to encourage goal setting and success in school and at home. We consider each of our families part of our big karate family!

Do I have to be in shape to take class?

One of the best things about Karate and our school is that people of all abilities are welcome. Our classes are physical and you’ll work up a good sweat each time as you push yourself further and further.

What ages can take class at AFK Staunton?

Our youngest students are just 4 years old in the Lil Dragons class! At the Beginner level, students are 6 years and up: single students, families, and adults. Ask about our Adults Class on Mondays!

What is class like?

Our classes are a great workout - but you’ll be having so much fun, time flies! We start with a warm-up and move on to the focus of the week: grabs, self defense, katas, or fighting combinations. Depending on the day, students will work as a class, guided by the instructor, or a smaller group. Multiple instructors and our amazing “S.T.O.R.M. Team” assistants help us reach every student, every class and help them feel success.

How many times a week should I come to class?

Our Beginner program is two classes a week, for 30 minutes each time. Arrive early and get a little practice time in! The most successful students attend regularly.

How much do classes cost?

Because we have different programs, pricing may vary family to family. You’ll meet with an instructor who can answer all your questions and find the best fit for your situation and family.

How do I get signed up?

Everyone starts with a free karate class! Sign up through the link to contact an instructor. We’ll arrange a private intro or bring you into a group class. After that, we’ll discuss what being a karate student is all about!

How long does it take to get a black belt?

Our belts are earned, not given, and the journey to Black Belt looks different for different people.

The Beginner Program will help you see success from white belt to orange, with three months in each. From there, a student is invited to join the Black Belt Club and dedicate themselves to the goal of earning their black belt. The shortest amount of time, from white belt to black, is three to four years. Younger students commonly take longer to reach their black belt, depending on when they start their journey.

Along the way you’ll progress through multiple belts and levels as your knowledge of karate grows.

How can I be a successful karate student?

It’s simple: come to class and do your best each day.
